Natural gas is a hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane(CH4) , but commonly includes varying amounts of other higher alkanes and usually small amounts of impurities like water vapor (H2O), hydrogen sulfide(H2S), carbon dioxide(CO2), and nitrogen (N2 ) and others.

Natural gas must be processed from the impurities before can be used as a fuel. Five stages are often required to convert raw natural gas into fuel gas pipelined to the end user markets: extraction and gathering, gas purification, custody transfer and storage, compression and liquefaction.

H2O, H2S, and CO2are on the top list of impurities in natural gas that have to be analyzed to avoid corrosion to pipeline, prevent the danger of leakage and explosion, and finally guarantee a safe and quality gas supply to customers.
